Composite Fillings (Tooth-Colored Fillings)

When considering tooth fillings, one of the options available is composite fillings which are made from durable plastics that are similar in color to natural teeth. Because the composite fillings are tooth-colored, they look more natural and are less noticeable compared to other types of fillings.

Another benefit of tooth-colored fillings is that they are compatible with sealants, allowing your dentist to perform both procedures in a single sitting and thus preventing further decay. There are other advantages to composite, tooth-colored fillings such as, most importantly, its ability to bond to tooth structures. Also, in many cases these fillings can be repaired by the addition of more composite material.

What is a Composite Resin?

Composite resin, also known as dental resin, is a synthetic compound made from plastic and other materials that is used to replace tooth material. In its uncured state, it has a soft, putty-like consistency, allowing it to be shaped and molded to fit on the tooth for cavity fillings or chip replacements. Before applying the composite resin, the tooth is etched and a bonding liquid is used. Once in place, a special light or heat is used to cure and harden the resin. White composite fillings or bonding treatments can last for many years, even decades.

Composite resin can be matched to the color of your teeth, making the fillings nearly invisible once cured. In addition to fillings and repairs, composite resin can also be used for cosmetic bonding. This technique can reshape teeth or cover stains that cannot be removed by whitening treatments. Cosmetic bonding can achieve similar aesthetic results as veneers, but in a single visit and at a lower cost.

If you have a cavity or need a tooth repair, you do not have to settle for silver fillings. Ask our dental team at Valley View Dental about composite or white fillings and cosmetic bonding. Contact our Castro Valley office to schedule your next appointment.
